YOUTH ATHLETICS
Youth Athletics
The Saint Philip Athletic Program is a ministry organized to assist youth/adults in developing life skills while preparing them to becoming productive Christian. We use sports as a tool to attract families to Christ. It is our desire to get the entire family involved in physical activity to enhance the health and well-being of their body, mind and soul. Each participant is placed in a structured environment so they can benefit from the integrity and experience of outstanding coaching. The athletic team venture affords the maturing youth and growing Christian adult an opportunity to establish social skills, discipline and confidence in a Christian setting. Our goal is simple; we want the participants to have fun while giving them the best chance to succeed. The program is planned and implemented within an aerial of love and patience so the Christian experience is demonstrated with each activity.
Mission:
The mission of the Saint Philip Athletic Program is to plan, promote, organize, and implement a comprehensive and competitive athletic program for the members and surrounding communities of Saint Philip AME Church.
Objective:
The objective of the Saint Philip Athletic Program is to teach life skills that are helpful in developing productive Christian Citizens.
History:
The Saint Philip Athletic Program was organized in 1979 with adult women and men softball teams. The teams participated in church leagues in Dekalb County and tournaments throughout the metropolitan Atlanta area. In 1981 adult women and men basketball teams were formed and they competed in the City of Atlanta Parks and Recreation Church leagues as well as Dekalb County Church leagues. The program expanded to youth in 1983 and girls and boys team join youth leagues in Dekalb County. Along with the youth basketball cheerleader squads were organized. Later that same year a co-ed bowling team was organized and they continue to bowl competitively weekly. A few years later in 1986 an adult golf group was organized and they competed in a number of local competitions earning numerous awards.
We currently have an extremely active youth basketball program with twelve teams and one hundred and twenty players. We participate in the Best Christian Athletic Association (BCAA) league with churches in South Dekalb County. The youth basketball program is now the cornerstone of our athletic program
